Personal Statement

The research interests of Yan Zhang focus on: 1. Structure studies of macromolecule and their complex related to human life and health; 2. Algorithm and technique development for high resolution structure reconstruction of biological samples at different scale level, range from single particle analysis and electron tomography reconstruction technique in cryo-electron microscopy to serial session or serial block face scanning electron microscopy (ssSEM or SBF-SEM) technique in volume electron microscopy. She designed important information restoration technique FIRT and ICON for cryo-electron tomography; developed helical reconstruction method and solved a series of helical assembly structures related to human disease; She also studied information restoration at z-axis for ssSEM and SBF-SEM, and the invention was patented and applied to research on the structure of mouse embryo and other large scale tissues and cells. She already published 21 research articles on international SCI-indexed journal such as PNAS, JSB, et. al., including 11 papers as the first or corresponding author (including co-first authors), obtained one authorized invention patent. She achieves the first helical assemble 3D structure in China, and her work on Maize filament actin was reported as the “Breakthrough report” in the “Cutting-edge research” session of the journal Plant Cell.
