Host defense against invading microbes requires recognizing pathogen-associated molecular patterns and coordinated interactions between different immune cell types. The long-term goal of our research team is to understand how immune cells are activated by pathogens and how their functions are coordinated to eradicate the pathogen. The current research is focusing on how the signaling of Toll-like receptors (TLRs), a prototype of mammalian “pattern-recognizing” receptor family, activates immune response in vivo. The main research aims are to define the role of TLR signaling (1) in the immune response to pathogens; (2) in promoting gut homeostasis and mucosal immunity; (3) in autoimmune diseases.
